What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the injection of a solution into the vein to cause it to get irritated and turn into a tiny scar that is invisible, cannot carry blood, and gradually disappear.
Sclerotherapy is the best way to treat most leg veins.
How is Sclerotherapy done?
The most commonly used the agent is Asclera. The in office procedure can be done in 30 minutes to 45 minutes depending on how many small veins are treated. During the
treatment, the patient may feel some mild cramping in the treatment area, which disappear quickly on its own. After treatment, required compression stockings are applied. Patient will be wearing the stockings for 2-3 weeks to decrease swelling and promote healing.
How is sclerotherapy compared with laser leg vein treatment?
Some smallest, thinnest leg veins may be too small to treat with sclerotherapy. The only method to treat these little veins is with laser, which doesn’t always work. Blood
vessels on the legs are much more resistant to laser treatment than vessels on the face or chest. As far as leg vein treatment is concerned, sclerotherapy is still the gold standard. Sclerotherapy is technically much more difficult but yields better, more reliable results for leg veins. Over the years, there have been many lasers such Nd:Yg and IPL devices that have been developed to try to compete with the efficacy of sclerotherapy, yet to date, none have succeeded. Lasers are great for facial telangiectases (small dilated vessels) but they are not as effective for leg vessels.
